WhatsApp beta version gets two-step verification

WhatsApp beta version gets two-step verification
The beta versions of WhatsApp for Android and Windows 10 Mobile now have two-step verification, an important security tool to authenticate user identity. Users who choose to activate two-step verification on WhatsApp will have to provide a 6-digit passcode to authenticate their phone number if they switch phones. An email address, provided at the time of setting up two-step verification, will be used to disable this security feature, if needed.

Gadget Ogling: Google Embraces a Hardware Future

The first smartphones Google has made by itself, Pixel and Pixel XL, are the first to bear Android 7.1 and the first to have the impressive Google Assistant built in. The Pixel has a 5-inch HD screen, while the Pixel XL offers a 5.5-inch QHD display. The phones have a quad-core processor and 4 GB of RAM. I like that the fingerprint sensor is on the back.

welcome to Gadget Dreams and Nightmares, the column that's taken just enough time away from pondering how many major email providers have built tools to let the government scan everyone's messages to pore over Google's latest hardware.

In our trove of data this time around are Google's smartphones, virtual reality headset, smart speaker and updated Chromecast.
As always, these are not reviews. The ratings, meanwhile, reflect just how much I'd like to try out each item, even if they do relatively little to advance the lethargic smartphone market.

Galaxy Note 7: The unanswered questions

Samsung's second recall of its Galaxy Note 7 handsets is an unprecedented disaster for the company and the wider mobile phone sector.
There have been huge battery-related recalls before - Nokia had to ask consumers to send back 46 million batteries in 2007 because of overheating fears, but because they were removable it did not mean a well-reviewed flagship had to be scrapped.
"Stop using your device, back up your data and switch it off," the Samsung told Note 7 owners the day after it confirmed it had shut down its assembly lines following a spate of fires.
A compensation scheme is being put in place - users will be offered the choice of either getting all their money back or swapping the phablet for an older, smaller-screened Galaxy S7 or S7 Edge phone plus a partial refund.
But several questions remain unanswered.

Quickly analyze Windows Update errors

It is unclear how many Windows users and administrators run into updating issues on Windows machines regularly or occasionally.
Updating issues can be frustrating, especially if the system lands in an endless cycle of downloads, installs, reboots and rollbacks that frustrate many users and system admins.
The past year alone has seen several borked updates that caused issues on Windows 10 machines.  The Windows 10 updates KB3081424 and KB3194496 caused issues on PCs around the world for instance.
Microsoft released the Reset Windows Update Agent, a tool designed to fix common updating errors. While that works well if Windows Update does not work correctly, the tool won't work if the issues are caused by updates or on Microsoft's side.

Google to open UK datacentre region as enterprise cloud push gathers pace

Google has revealed the next wave of work to increase the enterprise-readiness of its cloud platform, including opening its first UK datacentre region
The plans include expanding the geographic footprint of its datacentre portfolio to eight more regions during 2017, spanning London, Frankfurt and Finland, along with Mumbai, Singapore, Sydney, Northern Virginia and Sao Paulo.

The company currently operates five regions, with Tokyo to come online later this year.“By expanding to new regions, we deliver higher performance to customers,” wrote Brian Stevens, vice-president of Google Cloud, in a blog post. “In fact, our recent expansion in Oregon resulted in up to 80% improvement in latency for customers.”
